The Architecture of Broadband: Building on a Copper Foundation

April 22, 2026

Previously, we introduced the strategy that built Amphenol as an industry leader in helping service providers build their broadband networks. Operating as its storefront, Amphenol Broadband Solutions (ABS) brings the products of many Amphenol companies together in a customized way to solve a service provider’s unique challenges. ABS has its roots in a company formed over 80 years ago, Times Fiber Communications (TFC).

In the early decades of modern communications, coaxial cable emerged as a breakthrough medium for carrying ever-greater volumes of information over distance. Although the technology had roots dating back to patents and early experiments in the 1930s, it was during and after World War II that coax gained real traction in broadcast and network systems, enabling television and high-capacity telephony to expand across the United States and the world.

Against this backdrop of innovation, TFC was established in the late 1940s. From its earliest days, the company became known for designing and manufacturing high-performance coaxial cable and connectivity solutions that served the nascent cable television and communications markets. These cables and connectors were essential components in delivering reliable signals — from broadcast feeds to community antenna television (CATV) systems — laying the groundwork for what would become broadband networks.

As cable television spread in the 1950s and 1960s, coaxial infrastructure — with its capacity for multiple channels and robust shielding — was the backbone that made long-distance and multi-channel signals practical and affordable. Programs and voices once limited by geography now traveled over physical networks built from copper, amplifiers and connectors trusted for performance.

TFC’s products became deeply integrated into this growing ecosystem, supplying industry-leading cables, drop lines and interface hardware that connected homes, headends and network nodes. Their craftsmanship in coaxial design helped cable operators scale distribution networks, push bandwidth boundaries and transition from simple broadcast delivery toward two-way services and early data transmission.

Decades later, as broadband demand exploded with the rise of the internet and digital media, TFC continued to lead the industry’s evolution. The company expanded into fiber optic management equipment and advanced interconnect solutions, preparing networks for the next era of high-speed, low-latency communications that fiber would enable.

Today, as part of Amphenol Broadband Solutions, TFC stands as a foundational pillar of a family of companies advancing every facet of broadband infrastructure. From copper-based coax that first carried television and early data signals to modern hybrid and fiber-optic systems serving 21st-century connectivity, the legacy of TFC reflects the broader story of network evolution: relentless innovation built on a copper foundation, empowering communities and technologies across the globe.
